What do Gurbani, Shabad, Kirtan and Ardas really mean?
Gurbani:
Gurbani means compositions of the Sikh Gurus. Gurbani is composed of two words: 'Gur' meaning 'the Guru's' and 'bani' meaning 'word'.
Shabad:
Shabads are the religious hymns contained in Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
Kirtan:
Kirtan refers to singing of devotional songs in praise of God, sung in the classical mode. It is a musical prayer that brings joy to the soul. In North India, Kirtan is accepted as one of the surest paths to enlightenment.
Ardas:
Ardas is done before performing or after undertaking any significant task; after reciting the daily Banis (prayers); or completion of Paath or kirtan (hymn-singing).
