The first Punjabi movie was released in Lahore, Pakistan. The Pakistani film industry is called Lollywood, based on the name of Lahore city. Lollywood includes Punjabi films.
The punjabi film industry in India is called Punjwood. Since 2009, Punjwood has produced nearly 900 to 1000 punjabi movies. The number of punjabi movies released in 1970s was as low as nine per year whereas in 2010, it is as high as 400 to 500 per year. The number of Bollywood stars of punjabi origin taking part in punjabi films has also increased to a large extent.
