ABOUT QAWWALI
Qawwali is a form of Sufi devotional music. Earlier, qawwalis were performed only at Sufi holy places or dargahs in north India and the Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan. But with the good work of the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Pakistani singers Sabri Brothers, qawwali got an international exposure, especially at ‘WOMAD’(World of Music, Arts and Dance) festivals.
Qawwalis are written mostly in urdu and Punjabi though there are several qawwalis in other languages like Persian, Brajbhasha and Siraiki. But Urdu Qawwali and Punjabi Qawwali are the most prevalent.
Filmi Qawwali on the other hand is different from the traditional form of qawwali. Traditional qawwali represents the devotional music of the Sufis. Filmi qawwali is not devotional. It can be considered as a sub-genre of film music. The style is that of qawwali but the lyrics are general and form common songs of Lollywood (Pakistani film industry) and Bollywood (Indian film industry). One example of filmi qawwali is the song Pardah Hai Pardah of the hindi movie ‘Amar Akbar Anthony’ sung by Mohammed Rafi, and composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
